DRINK DESIGN

Let’s get this right, this is not a Drunk Design, it’s a Drink Design workshop. It’s a workshop about design with a twist. A lemon twist. And sugar garnish. Expect a giddy one-hour session during which we’ll demonstrate the basic principles of design - empathy, vision, creativity and balance through the process of designing a drink. Or better a drink experience:)

It’s an exciting time to be involved with technology and design. Car manufactures are no longer just car makers, they are technology companies. Watches no longer just tell the time, they tell us how we feel. With more new devices and gadgets coming out every week in different shapes and screen sizes, how do we as designers ensure we are being innovative and designing meaningful experiences for people? How can we make what we do more enjoyable, meaningful and rewarding? During this workshop, I want to share some of my experiences in designing new digital products and also learn from yours.

THE FUTURE OF THE FUTURE

The future belongs to those who prepare for it today. We should continuously emphasize social, ecological and technical innovation that we have around us. There is software being developed for cars that should replace drivers, because each year, millions of people die in car accidents and future generations won't ever understand, how a man was allowed to drive a car. The problem with imagining the future is that we try to do it with current materials, but what could our fate look like if we thought outside the box?

THE INNOVATOR'S MINDSET: HOW ONE NEEDS TO THINK TO INNOVATE

Begin by protecting the future from the past, embracing the inevitable. Look at the past clues and always fight positively. Don’t believe the hype; not knowing is also normal. Innovation is something you can't buy and technology is not always the solution. Great ideas have lonely childhoods. Laurent will give these angles from a point of observer, strategist, investor, and creative matchmaker for industry leaders, start-ups, policy makers, guiding them through the intricacies of emerging technologies and the larger social and economic changes that shape them.

LESS TRUST IS MORE: BITCOIN, BLOCKCHAIN, AND THE FUTURE OF DECENTRALIZED TECHNOLOGY

When most people think of bitcoin, they think of it as a digital currency. But its real power lies in its trustless, decentralized nature and its underlying technology, a distributed ledger called the blockchain. Bitcoin tech can do for transacting and authenticating what email did for global communication in the 90s. Will bitcoin be the next big internet protocol?

GEEK HERESY: RESCUING SOCIAL CHANGE FROM THE CULT OF TECHNOLOGY

Technologists and policy-makers love to boast about modern innovation, and in their excitement, they exuberantly tout technology’s boon to society. But what have our gadgets actually accomplished? Over the last four decades, we saw an explosion of new technologies – from the Internet to the iPhone, from Google to Facebook – but in that same period, the rate of poverty stagnated, only to rise in the recent recession. So, a golden age of innovation in the world’s most advanced country did nothing for our most prominent social ill.

I WENT TO JAIL FOR MY CAUSE. WHAT DID YOU DO?

There are few big moments in life where you feel that something moves you deeply. Graduating school. Getting your first kiss. Writing that first book, publishing that first scientific document. A loved one dies. Getting your first customer in your café. Some of them might seem small and trivial to others but to you they are huge and life altering. We built the system. We trusted it because we trusted ourselves. We’re all drones now. Maybe we’ve always been drones.

BEATING POLITICS WITH TECHNOLOGY

We are a community of people, we have politicians that we elect, we can demand that they do things, but we are way too lazy to do that today. How can we leverage social media to combat corruption, bring more institutional transparency, accountability and integrity, with a particular focus on empowering citizens and access to information. The workshop will display new approaches to the use of social media when challenging local and global wrongdoings. The author is a known internet figure and ran for European Parliament seat.

INVISIBLE INFRASTRUCTURES: MAPPING THE INTERNET

With everybody floating around on a cloud in the Internet, people seldom think of the network as something physical. However, even with all these terms which are more marketing than technology, the Internet in its essence is just an enormous network consisting of cables, routers, servers and, in recent years, other peripherals that somehow know how to talk to each other. Getting to know the invisible can be challenging, but it's a challenge worth accepting because it opens new, unexplored horizons.

FROM THINKING TO EXECUTION, FROM IDEAS TO CONCRETE ACTIONS.

Putting your knowledge in good use and making a difference via entrepreneurship. How to create transformative actions by combining real world problems, academic know-how and entrepreneurial reaction with an open multidisciplinary community. How do we combine the curious individuals, experimenters and impact seekers to create an impact in the society.

RESTORING THE BALANCE: HOW GENDER DISPARITIES IN TECHNOLOGICAL INDUSTRIES ARE DAMING THE HUMAN RACE

Gender equality in tech has been a hot topic for the past few years, but it’s increasingly rare to encounter a workplace that has truly achieved a 50/50 split. Is it possible? What indicators from other settings do we have to suggest we should strive for such a seemingly utopic environment? In this talk various microcosms of human and animal societies that operate with varying ratios of gender balance will be examined.

A WINNING MINDSET FOR TECHNOLOGICAL BREAKTHROUGH

How many people live in the Balkans? Fifty, sixty million? What has this population contributed to the accomplishments of the modern world? Apart from a number of recent wars, and several ancient culinary and architectural delights. There is no reason to assume that Balkan peoples are less creative, less hard-working, and less productive. In fact, the region’s challenging natural environments and very high cultural diversity give more impetus for survival instincts. And for many centuries, this region has been at the forefront of new technologies: think yoghurt or iron combat gear.

STARTUP STORIES: SILICON VALLEY, 2001-2014

Join Lane Becker, serial Internet entrepreneur, for a down-and-dirty story of founding, funding, growing, struggling, and ultimately selling three high-flying startups in Silicon Valley during the lean years of 2001-4, the rebirth years of 2005-8, and on into the present day. It’s the story of Silicon Valley told through one entrepreneur’s rollercoaster experience, along with some predictions about what’s going to happen next.

FROM PIONEERING TECH TO THE WAY TO WELLVILLE

Looking in the past and exploring the next technology frontier. What can we learn from pioneers, innovators, risk takers and creators? What's the importance of data in discovery of next wave innovations? How can we benefit in terms of health, DNA, machine learning and science in general? Where does this quest lead us? Esther Dyson is a world known digital visionary and she is the most influential woman in technology world today.

SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS

Qëndrim Uka from NGO Lëvizja Koha along with other members are going to perform experiments and present their projects to the audience of DOKU:TECH. These projects have resulted from a Science and Cultural Fair, which aimed to get students more involved in science, culture and art. The work of science, culture and art of these students was displayed to other students, youth and citizens in general.

MAKERSPACE

BONEVET is a non-profit community center where people gather to share resources and knowledge, work on projects, network, and build. Being the first makerspace in the region, BONEVET houses state of the art manufacturing equipment, community and education program that enables its members to design, prototype and create manufactured works that are not possible with the resources available to individuals working alone. The informal arrangement of lab, shop, and conference rooms encourages learning through “hands-on” exploration. At DOKU:TECH, you will have the chance to get hands-on experience on 3D printing and other tools.

CANDLE FORMING

Diona, Etnik, and Pylljon from Gjakova are very interested to help people in need, in this case they conducted workshops where children with special needs learnt how to form candles from Bee’s wax in different shapes. At DOKU:TECH, everyone who is interested can learn for two days in a row how to form candles with flavors for their homes. Other than that, wax used for candles is healthy and very easy to work with.

KOSOVO VOLUNTEERS PLATFORM

Kosovo Volunteers is first-of-its-kind volunteermatch platform in Kosovo. It is a free platform where non-profit organizations can post volunteer opportunities and where passionate, skilled volunteers can find the right opportunity to lend their talent and time. In addition to matching volunteers and recruiters, the platform provides volunteer-seeking organizations with tools and resources to help enhance their community engagement programmes, and volunteers with resources to seek and secure great volunteering experiences.Kosovo Volunteers platform was developed by UNICEF Innovations Lab Kosovo with support from Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) office in Kosovo, and Peer Educators Network (PEN). Presence of the Kosovo Volunteers workshop activities is supported by OSCE.

PRISHTINA HACKERSPACE

Prishtina Hackerspace is a co-working open experimentation space established exclusively for technological, educational, cultural and scientific purposes. The aim of the space is to: Provide workspace, equipment and other resources for communal use by all members; Encourage continued and after-school learning through workshops, classes, seminars and mentoring; Create a safe and open environment for experimentation in technology and art.

EYESIGHT TEST

Let's See - we all deserve the best sight in our daily lives. This team is going to provide a very special service during the DOKU:TECH event; they are going to test people who think they have bad eyesight. Arbnor, Alma, Uresa, and Albrim during the project implementation tested more than 200 people in Ferizaj. Besides the very creative campaign of raising awareness, they are also very good at testing people and evaluating whether they need an ophthalmologist check-up.

MEET YOUR CAREER

A very needed platform for youth of Kosovo, especially youth from high schools who are going to decide what they want to study, which is a very important and tough decision. But, don't worry, three girls from Ferizaj - Ariete, Dorotea, and Arianisa are going to present at DOKU:TECH their platform which makes this decision much easier. They are going to tell students of high schools how to use this platform, what it stands for, and how they can easily decide and see their talents by testing themselves in which field they fit the best. Don't miss out this opportunity, it's very helpful.

PORTRAIT DRAWING

“Artshift” is a group of young artists from Kaçanik. Together, the very talented members of the team, Blin, Dardan, Valdet, Alush and Arian, will come to DOKU:TECH and provide portrait drawings for free for all people who are interested to have one back home.

FLOPPY DATA PUNK WORKSHOP AND CONCERT

Floppy Data Punk is a lo-fi electro bend that is performing mostly statistical data in music form with 3.5 inch floppy drives. During this workshop, band members will make a short workshop on how to use old floppy drives and transform them into the music instrument with a help of arduino. After workshop they will perform some 8-bit music covers.

YOUTH FOR MORE RESILIENCE THROUGH DIY TECH

The youth-for-youth ngo Prosperity Initiative in Kosovo (PIKS), through their project Lokalizo addresses environmental concerns and creates more resilience in the community. Lokalizo provides tools for concerned citizens to report issues they have to local government authorities. Some of the tools used are the Internet and mobile devices to identify local issues such as : damaged public stairs, a hole in the street, misplaced garbage, broken water pipeline, construction risks, etc. The Lokalizo project will gradually empower citizens to contribute and become agents of positive change in their communities. Lokalizo has also a field team that roams around communities to tackle urgent issues. For this, the team also makes use of a Balloon and Kite Mapping Kit, provided by the PublicLab, to create aerial images and maps of the affected community by a particular problem. Make sure you join the workshop to get to know more about the work of our team and try out yourself the many Do It Yourself technological tools we employ. BE PRACTICAL - RECYCLE

The Green Art Center team are going to hold a workshop for artistic recreation by spreading information on how to express creativity even in recycled materials that were already used but could be made into concrete objects so that they could be used again by people on a daily basis.

BEER BREWING

From grain to glass, everything you need to know to make beer at home. Brew 20 litres of ale with Valon Kozhani from Sabaja Craft Brewery. This five-hour session will cover everything from recipe selection and brewing, to bottling and pouring the perfect pint. Sabaja beer will be available for purchase at the workshop.

MAKING RAKIJA

How to make Rakija The workshop “How to Make Rakija” is a practical demonstration organized by Frutomania. The Frutomania team will prepare beforehand the fermented masses of apple and plum fruits. The fermented masses will be transferred to DOKU:TECH together with the equipment. The equipmend consists of copper cooker and coolant pot for condensation. Each step will be presented to the audience by our specialist. The masses will be distilled twice in order to produce rakija. Effects of etanol will be also presented to participants and how to ensure it is not in in the final product. Frutomania staff will also present its final products to workshop participants and if others are also interested. Frutomania Juices will be also brought to the site. Frutomania staff will be also presenting to the audience theoretical part of distillation with a short presentation.
